Who’s to blame? Blame it on me

Undoubtedly family background influences a child’s character. However this affirmation is sustained, actually, under many other factors, which can make possible for parents to be successful raising their children. A good social environment is based in education, economy, leisure and many other factors that can give families conditions for a healthier development. So, when a thing goes wrong, who should be responsible? Parents should be punished for their juveniles’ crimes?

When a juvenile commits a crime, the first reaction is to blame parents. And one of the arguments used frequently is that parents did not provide a good education for that kids. Some people used to say that: “If parents teach their children how to behave in society, they results would be less crime and violence. In the other hand, who should provide education? Who creates the rules or have the power to interfere and change the educational system? Parents are part of the educational process. Government controls and creates the educational system, they are the ones who have the power to provide structure, professionals and improve education. If they provide a good educational system, of course, violence and crime among juveniles would decrees.

But education is only part of the problem. Many of those juveniles who have commit crimes, especially in Brazil, need more than education. They where born in an unfair system that privilege “The rich” and avoid “The poor”. They are almost condemned to live miserable lives without any basic health conditions, food, homes or leisure. These kids should have the rights to have fun, create relationships, learn music, read good books, and meet another world full of perspectives and opportunities. That should be some of the factors that could provide to families conditions for a healthier development.

Another important issue is economy. The majority of the juveniles that commit crimes are from the low average part. Their parents are struggled working daily to provide at least food and a place to live, most of them we couldn’t call a house. In favelas they live in an unbelievable poverty, surviving with the minimum wage.

Parents and children are brought to the situation where they are trying to succeed, even though the situation is drive then to fail. It is very easy to condemn and even more to find someone to blame. But I believe that we all are responsible for that situation. When we vote, when we ask what has been done with our taxes, when we participate at the meeting at school, and when we are aware about what happens around us. We all are responsible, not parents, or juveniles alone. I believe juveniles should pay for their crimes, however, instead of criticize them we should put ourselves in their position. If we had the same conditions around us: poverty, violence, drugs, and rejection from the same society who judge them, would we behave differently? I don’t think so!

Who’s to blame, we should say and admit: Blame it on me.
